Congratulations on purchasing your computer. This document adds to and updates the information in the manuals that came with your computer. It is a good idea to read this document now, and keep a copy handy for future reference.
If your computer is connected to a printer, choose Print from the File menu to print a copy of this document. When you are finished reading and printing this Read Me, choose Quit from the File menu to quit the SimpleText application program.
What’s on the Apple Macintosh CD?
This CD contains the latest system software and many other useful items for your computer. Included on this CD are the following:
• Macintosh Tutorial: Offers on-screen instructions to get started with your computer. Macintosh Tutorial comes installed on your computer, and you access it from the Guide Menu. If you need to reinstall the software, see the Read Me in the Macintosh Tutorial folder.
• Extras folder: Contains several application programs and extensions. For information on the software in the Extras folder, see About the Extras Folder in the Extras folder.
• Utilities folder: Includes Apple HD SC Setup, an alias to Disk Copy 4.2, Disk First Aid, and SimpleText.
• Disk Images: Contains floppy disk images for producing copies of System 7.5, PowerTalk, and QuickDraw GX.
• Launcher: Provides an easy way to reinstall system software, get information about your CD, find utilities, and create backup floppy disks from the disk images provided on this CD.
• PowerTalk: Provides built-in electronic mail, plus the advantage of a single mailbox for all your network services. PowerTalk comes on your hard disk, although it has not been installed. Apple recommends that your computer have at least 8 MB of RAM before you install PowerTalk. For installation information, see the PowerTalk Install Read Me in the PowerTalk folder.
• QuickDraw GX: Offers enhanced printing, typography, and color publishing capabilities. QuickDraw GX comes on your hard disk, although it has not been installed. Apple recommends that your computer have at least 8 MB of RAM before you install QuickDraw GX. For installation information, see the QuickDraw GX Install Read Me in the QuickDraw GX folder.
Starting Your Computer From the CD
If you experience problems starting your computer, you can start up using the CD. Follow these steps:
1. Make sure the Apple Macintosh CD icon appears on your desktop.
2. Open the Startup Disk control panel.
3. Click the Apple Macintosh CD icon.
4. Close the Startup Disk control panel.
5. Choose Restart from the Special menu.
When you want to start up again from your hard disk, open the Startup Disk control panel and select your hard disk.
Reinstalling System Software From the CD
Apple recommends that you use your CD as the startup disk. (See Starting Your Computer From the CD.)
To reinstall system software version 7.5, follow these steps:
If you are using your CD as the startup disk:
When your computer starts up, a Launcher panel appears on the desktop.
1. Click the Install System Software button.
2. Click the System 7.5 button.
When you want to reinstall PowerTalk or QuickDraw GX software, click the PowerTalk or QuickDraw GX button.
3. In the Easy Install dialog box, click Install.
Restart your computer when installation is done.
If your CD is mounted on your desktop (you are already booted on the internal hard drive):
1. Make sure the Apple Macintosh CD icon appears on the desktop.
2. Open the Apple Macintosh CD.
3. Double click the Install System 7.5 icon.
4. In the Easy Install dialog box, click Install.
Restart your computer when installation is done.
To reinstall PowerTalk or QuickDraw GX software, see the Installation Read Me files located within their respective folders.
